The Pitching Development Pyramid: What Most Players Get Wrong About Development

7/16/20252 min read

Everyone wants velocity, but very few understand the order of operations it takes to earn it. Think of development like a pyramid — if you stack skills out of order, the whole thing collapses. At URATBB, we follow a simple but powerful structure to build complete, durable, high-performing pitchers: The Pitching Pyramid.

The Pyramid Layers (Bottom to Top)

  1. Functional Training & Movement Patterns
This is the foundation. If you don’t move well, you can’t throw well — period. We begin with functional movement training and mechanical patterning to establish stability, mobility, and coordination. We use tools like ArmCare.com to assess how the body moves and identify limitations that could affect mechanics, recovery, or performance. This level isn’t flashy — but it’s the reason everything else works.

  2. Movement Proficiency
Once the foundation is in place, we start refining how athletes move through their delivery. This is where movement patterns become efficient, repeatable, and athletic. Consistency in movement equals consistency in results. This layer builds trust in your mechanics and allows pitchers to begin throwing with more intent and less compensation. This is where we start to adjust your biomechanics.

  3. Game Understanding
With consistent movement in place, we can begin teaching Baseball IQ. This includes situational awareness, pitch selection, understanding hitter tendencies, and reading the game. Players at this level are no longer just throwers — they’re developing into pitchers who can think and compete at a higher level.

  4. Velocity Development
Once we’ve taken care of the foundation, then — and only then — do we chase horsepower. Velocity work includes strength training, sprint-based conditioning, med ball throws, and high-output velocity days. Most players want to start here, but skipping the first three layers almost always leads to injury, inconsistency, and plateaus.

  5. Pitch Shapes & Stuff
At the top of the pyramid is pitch design — breaking balls, fastball ride, tunneling, and sequencing. This level can overlap with velocity work depending on where an athlete is in their development. But let’s be clear: if you don’t throw hard enough, it doesn’t matter how good your stuff is. Greg Maddux is often used as an example of “command over velo,” but early in his career he was throwing in the upper 90s. Stuff matters. Velocity matters. And together, they’re lethal. We like to use PitchLogic for this phase as its important in tracking the improvement and changes in how your stuff is working.

Why Most Players Get It Backwards

Too many players try to jump into velocity or pitch shaping before they can repeat their mechanics or compete mentally. They mimic the training of MLB arms — not realizing that those arms were built over years of structured development. When you skip steps, you get stuck. Or worse — you get hurt.

How URATBB Builds Pitchers Differently

We assess every athlete and guide them through the pyramid one step at a time. We don’t guess. We test, measure, and adapt using tools like ArmCare and personalized development plans. Our goal isn’t just to make you throw harder — it’s to build you into a complete, durable, dominant pitcher who thrives at the next level.

Conclusion

Not everyone is at the same place on the development pyramid. That’s okay — the key is knowing where you are and what comes next. You may even need to combine a few steps if you're getting started later in the journey. Once you understand your position, you can structure your training, practices, and mindset to climb one level at a time. And when the foundation is strong, the results last.
