The Colorado Dugout Club

I had the opportunity to speak to numerous coaches and programs at the Colorado Dugout Club Coaches Convention

Last weekend, I had the honor of speaking at the Colorado Dugout Club Coaches Convention in Denver — sharing insights from over 15 years of developing rotational athletes.

The room was packed with coaches from youth to college levels, all hungry for ways to build stronger, healthier, more dominant pitchers. I broke down my presentation on "Building the Modern Starting Pitcher" (which you can [view here](https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/10LiE_QOb3HVHb6h0JBL2w4ASSJwAE3RfTWTjpC9OvQM/edit?usp=sharing) if you missed it) and dove into strategies for controlling the running game. You can also find a short overview of it on our youtube channel as well.

Here are the key takeaways

Foundation First for Lasting Velocity

Just like last other stories with our training system, elite pitching isn't about quick fixes. It's about layering strength, mechanics, and pitch design in the right order.

From the presentation:

- Start with Arm Health: Use ArmCare daily to build strength and durability into the arm. Stronger arms will perform better.(See the research in the presentation)

- Mechanics Second- Without strength, mechanics will fail. This is where you start to build upon your foundation.

- Game Management / Velo Development- Once you have the base of strength and the consistency of your movement, now you focus on learning the game and building velocity. Velocity is not weighted balls, it is consistent guided strength training.

Coaches loved the real examples — like our All-Conference guy going 84–86 → 92–94. Moral: Skip the foundation, and the whole arsenal crumbles under game pressure.

Shutting Down the Running Game – Pickoffs, Strategy, and Mental Edge

The second half of my talk focused on something every coach battles: baserunners stealing games.

Key strategies I shared:

- 3 Ways to Control the Running Game: Vary your looks, picks, and timing. Learning to control these variables is the difference maker in stopping the big inning. With how important the steal has become again recently, you must know how to stop what the opposing team is trying to do. Stopping runners from going 1st to 3rd keeps the big inning under control.

Why This Matters for Your 2026 Season

Whether you're a coach building a staff or a parent helping your kid stand out, these are the tools that turn "good" into "elite."

The convention reinforced what we see at URATBB every day: Success comes from health-first training + smart strategies.
