NJC's Early Season Success
How the process has lead to improved results early in the season

URATBB Tuesday Blog – February 10, 2026 NJC Baseball Update: How We're Turning Pitching Development Into Wins on the Field
One of the most rewarding parts of what we do at URATBB is seeing the work translate directly to real games.
Right now we're 10 games into the 2026 season with the Northeastern Junior College baseball program, sitting at 7-3 — and the pitching numbers tell a clear story of progress.
2025 (through first 10 games):
54 walks issued
90 strikeouts
2026 (through first 10 games):
40 walks issued
113 strikeouts
That's a 26% reduction in walks and a 26% increase in strikeouts in the same sample size — while competing in the same conference against similar competition.
This isn't random. It's the result of a deliberate, multi-layered approach that goes well beyond mechanics and pitch design.
What We Focused On During This Trip
This past trip we zeroed in on three areas that separate good pitchers from dominant ones — especially at the junior college level where margins are thin and every inning counts.
Pitch Usage Fine-Tuning We spent time reviewing PitchLogic data and game footage to optimize sequencing and pitch mix against lefties and righties.
Platoon splits were a big emphasis: developing clear "vs. LHH" and "vs. RHH" plans.
Shifted some pitchers toward higher fastball usage early in counts when behind, then burying breaking balls when ahead — reducing free passes while increasing whiffs.
Result: Walks dropped from 5.4/game to 4.0/game; K/9 climbed noticeably.
Mindset & Game Awareness Pitching development isn't just physical — it's mental and strategic. We worked on "learning the game" moments:
Reading swings and hitter tendencies mid-game
Adjusting tempo and eye-line to disrupt timing
Owning the pause on the mound to control rhythm (especially with runners on) These intangibles don't show up on a radar gun but show up on the scoreboard. Coaches saw immediate improvement in composure during high-leverage situations.
Platoon Neutrality & Long-Term Development We don't build pitchers to be "good vs. righties" or "good vs. lefties" — we build them to be platoon-neutral threats.
Secondary pitches that play both ways (e.g., changeups with arm-side fade or cutters with glove-side bite).
Consistent arm action across the arsenal so hitters can't pick up differences.
This creates a pitcher who competes year-over-year, regardless of matchup or lineup — the exact skill colleges and pro scouts look for.
Why This Matters Right Now
Season is underway. The teams that make noise in March, April, and May are the ones that made smart adjustments in January and February — not the ones who waited for "game reps" to figure things out.
The NJC staff and players are buying in because the process is clear:
Build the arm (strength & durability)
Fix the delivery (sequence & efficiency)
Master the craft (usage, mindset, platoon awareness)
When all three layers click, you get results like 7-3 with 113 Ks and 40 walks in 10 games.
